The Leica 35mm Summicron v3

The Leica 35mm Summicron V3 is lens I instantly felt at home with. I bought it not long after I bought my M7 and for a little while it just seemed to make the ideal combination for almost everything I wanted to photograph. In the time since then though, the regularity with which I have used it has gradually dwindled. What's interesting about this, is that whilst my appreciation for it as a lens hasn't changed, what I want from a lens and perhaps even the camera it's attached to has.

The Carl Zeiss ZM f/1.5 50mm C Sonnar

It took me so long to commit to the idea of buying a Zeiss ZM 50mm Sonnar. I must have hanged my mouse over a buy-it-now button of some sort countless times. Something just kept changing my mind at the last minute. Just recently, I decided enough was enough, I was going to end this cycle of indecision, bite the bullet and just try one. And you know what, my only regret was not buying the damned thing sooner.

The Canon 85mm f1.8 LTM – Guest Review by James Fox-Davies

My choice of short telephoto lens is slightly out of the ordinary. In the past I’ve tried a few Leica lenses (90mm f4 Elmar etc) but haven’t been too impressed with either their size or their image rendering. After purchasing my Canon 50mm f0.95 I got hold of a copy of the incredibly informative ‘Canon M39 Rangefinder Lenses 1939 – 1971’ by Peter Kitchingman. I read it cover to cover in a few days and one lens in particular (well, a few, but that’s another story…) stood out as of interest to me – the Canon 85mm f1.8 LTM. As mentioned in a previous post on this site, I mainly shoot a Custom Leica M  with a 1963 Canon 50mm f0.95 modified to Leica M-mount. However, when I’m travelling, or even just out for a long photowalk, I’ll often try and take a wide angle and short telephoto lens. My camera bag is just about big enough for 3 lenses and the Leica M3 body. Hamish has already reviewed my Carl Zeiss Hologon 16mm f8 modified to M-mount so I thought I’d write a little about the Canon 85mm f1.8 LTM, my telephoto lens of choice. Leica 40mm Summicron Lens Review

The Leica 40mm Summicron is an odd little lens, both in terms of what it is, and its reputation. I guess this is why I was attracted to the idea of trying one out; that and it's match to my little Leica CL...

The Lomography Zenit New Jupiter 3+ 50mm f/1.5 Art lens

A few months ago - the very same week the Lomography New Jupiter 3+ was announced - I had an email from a chap at Lomography in New York. He'd spotted I was having a lens from a compact camera modded, and wondered if I wanted to try out their Minitar; a Lomo LC-A lens modded by Lomography to M-mount. Obviously I said yes, I'd really like to, but if they were up for loaning me gear, the lens I'd really like to borrow first is the New Jupiter 3+.

Since it was only just released at the time, the demo copies were out in the hands of much bigger fish than me. As such, I had to wait a little while. A few weeks ago, after bothering the nice marketing lady on the Lomography stand at the photography show, a package landed on my desk containing a rather trendy looking box with a very shiny lens inside. This post compromises the thoughts and experiences I had in the few weeks I had to play with it...

The Leica 28mm Elmarit-M ASPH – one of the best lenses I’ve ever… sold…

I only shot a few photos from a couple of rolls with the Leica 28mm Elmarit-M ASPH, but it was enough to realise that it's nothing short of a stunning bit of kit. As good as it is though, I didn't keep it long. Owning it just made me realise that I should own my ideal 28mm lens - the Minolta G-Rokkor 28mm f/3.5 - instead. I shall get around to writing about the Minolta lens in more detail another day. This post - all be it a short one - is largely about the Elmarit-M, the limited but very happy time we spent together and the personal reasons it just became a stepping stone to the Minolta.

The Carl Zeiss 28mm ZM Biogon

The Zeiss 28mm ZM Biogon is a Zeiss's answer to the m-mount 28mm lens. Its reputation precedes it as an excellent piece of glass, but however objectively good it is, that's not the sum total of what I'm interested in. What I'm also interested in discovering is just how much of the character I see and love in my 50mm Sonnar can be found in other Zeiss M lenses...

The MS-Optics 21mm f/4.5 Perar – a tiny, and very eccentric lens

The MS-Optics 21mm f/4.5 Perar is, without a doubt the smallest lens I've ever shot with on a Leica rangefinder. In fact, it's probably one of the smallest full frame lenses ever made. Yet despite its size, it still focuses, it still has an aperture control and is even rangefinder coupled. On paper, this thing is a feat of genius. The question is, how well does it work in practice?

The Voigtlander Nokton f/1.5 50mm LTM – Guest Review by Hern Tan

The Voigtlander Nokton f/1.5 50mm is a lens that has long been compared to, unfairly, as the lesser of the two 50mm f/1.5 lenses offered in M mount (or in this case LTM), being shoved aside by the Zeiss ZM C Sonnar in terms of size and eclipsed by the Leica Summilux Asph 50mm f/1.4 in terms of raw biting performance. However, I have always maintained that this oft overlooked lens is not just a superb performer in its own right, but one that can hold its own against the other two giants. It may well be the crown jewel of Cosina Voigtlander, and considering the many great lenses they’ve pumped out over the years, that’s no small feat.

Avenon 21mm f/2.8 super-wide lens mini-review

I think of my mate James as slightly eccentric in his choices when it comes to camera equipment. A good example of this eccentricity is the work that he had done to a Leica M3 and Canon 50mm 0.95 "Dream lens". As well as demonstrating his eccentric nature, that particular combo also nods toward the fact that James likes a fast, or at least faster lens. I'm pretty certain that he's also slightly more attracted to lower contrast, older lenses, as well as having a penchant for slightly less common equipment. I may be wrong in all of these assumptions, though I suspect that I'm quite likely right, since all of these preferences fit well to the Avenon 21mm f/2.8 super-wide lens.

DJ-Optical / 7Artisans 50mm f/1.1 (ongoing) Review

It's fair to say that DJ-Optical 7Artisans 50mm f/1.1 has caused a bit of a stir in the world of rangefinder photographers. The forums are alive with speculation and commentary, both from those who do and (as is usually the case) those who don't actually own one. I now do own one, so I thought I would write a bit of an ongoing lens review.
